Target….yes, you, Target the Corporation. I like you. On some days I may even love you. But for the love of all that is shopping, please pull your heads out of your rears and listen to me. A shopper. A mother. A Target Debit Card holder.
I read this article while drinking my coffee this morning: http://www.foxbusiness.com/features/2017/05/16/target-under-pressure-rethinks-its-web-goals-wsj.html
Yes, I realize it came out about 9 days ago but I’m a mother….I get to the news I want to read when I can – after sifting through all the garbage I don’t want to read to actually find something interesting.
Your problem has nothing to do with “diversifying your items online” – you have tons of great items online and I actually appreciate that they are sold by Target, not a second or third party seller, unlike Walmart. I cannot stand the Walmart website. No one I know likes it which makes it even more bizarre to me that you would want your site “be” more like theirs.
Your biggest problem is that 95% of the great, new items you offer online that I want to buy are NOT AVAILABLE. Not only are they not available online but their not available in any store. Let me give you an example of how my brain works as I shop your site.
My son wants the figure “Nebula” from Guardians of the Galaxy. I do a Google web search and it shows that Target sells it. Great! I go out to your website, locate Nebula and BAM! I’m hit with the dreaded message:
Ok…..fine. Let me see if they have “Thanos”, another Guardians of the Galaxy figure. They do! Oh wait….
Fine….let’s see if they have the Playskool heroes Drax and Star Lord figures that he wants….they do….or do they….
Nope. And this time it brings up stores in Georgia instead of Maryland but even doing a check of my local stores it’s the same result.
If this was an isolated incident or just one item I could overlook it. It’s not. All during the Christmas season I tried to shop at Target and they rarely had what I needed. As it is I have been tracking the toys above for 3 WEEKS and the message never changes. The thing is, it’s not like I live out in the middle of a cornfield – there are at least 15 Target’s I could shop between work and home.
Sigh. Back to shopping. I need cat litter, let’s see if they even have THAT. They do but the largest is only 28 pounds….I know they make larger boxes and since I have two cats and hate lugging home these heavy boxes I need as much as possible if I’m having it delivered….and this is where things really start to go south for you Target. Now, I’m going to the one place you DO NOT want your customers to go…..Amazon. And look at that….I could buy 38 pounds on Amazon for only $5 more and it’s included in Prime which means it ships for free and I wouldn’t have to spend another $15 to get the free shipping at Target.
Not only that but I do a search for the toys I was looking for and guess what – they have ALL of them and I don’t even care that they are priced more. I don’t even care that I won’t get the extra 5% off for using my Target Debit Card. I don’t even care that I spend $10 a month on Prime to get the free shipping. I want them for my son.
That is $73 that could have went to you Target. Actually it will be more than that because now that I am out on Amazon I see they have the Mrs. Meyer’s Multi-Purpose basil scent that I love on sale for 20% off. Target, you have it on sale too but I have to buy FIVE bottles to get the $5 gift card. Seriously. I have one house Target, just one!!
And look, they have the Peter Pan Simply Peanut Butter on sale too – Target, you do not sell that but you really need to taste it and get rid of some of the other crap you do sell so you can add this little jar of deliciousness.
And this is another reason your sales are tanking – I’m not going to Target to buy “stuff” because of a name brand. In fact I rarely if ever buy clothes at Target for myself because their too damn expensive. Stop wasting money on big names. I can get better deals at Macy’s attached to bigger names and that’s saying something!!
The same goes for just about anything in the Home section. It all looks to me like overpriced crapola. I mean, seriously, the people who will pay $95 for this metal deer head are not Target shoppers:
Target shoppers are the ones who are spending $95 at Amazon to get what they want and need. Go to Walmart and look at what they sell in their home section and just go ahead and add that to your stores instead. It will actually sell, trust me.
While I’m ranting, let’s talk about Cartwheel. I LOVE anyway that I can save extra money but seriously, why can’t I simply sign-in to my Cartwheel and only pull up the sales of the inventory of my local store? My generation is busy and if we take our precious time to drive to Target it is because we want what you are advertising. Leading us into the store and hoping that we will buy something full price (after expecting a 50% sale on our favorite yogurt which this Target has never even sold) just pisses us off and makes us shop elsewhere. Which is why I get so angry shopping your website too. I hate wasting time. If you don’t have any item available right now, don’t advertise it. Period.
I tell you all of this with love and because I care, Target. I love retail. I love brick and mortar stores, contrary to what “studies” say. I don’t want you to go away. Please listen.
